Ferdinand Berthoud  ( nato nel 1727, morto nel 1807) era un importante fabbricante francese di orologi ed anche autore di numerosi trattati e manuali tecnici di orologeria come: Essai sur l’Horlogerie, Traite des Horloge Marines, Histoire de la mesure du temps. Pubblicò anche numerosi altri studi e ricerche contenenti una grande massa di utili informazioni riguardanti la storia, la teoria e la pratica dell’arte orologiera, trattando anche  le invenzioni di  Harrison’s, Sully’s and Le Roy’s, ed in generale con quanto di tecnico conosciuto alla sua epoca nel campo della orologieria. F. Berthoud, più grande di due anni del suo contemporaneo Breguet’s, termina una breve memoria sul suo brillante collega  scrivendo: “Non ha pubblicato nulla”. Nel 1897, Louis Berthoud, discendente di Ferdinand, si associò con  Georges Perret formando la “Perret & Berthoud”. Nel 1898, 2nd of September i due Soci fondarono una nuova manifattura di orologi chiamata “Universal Watch”. Da quel momento la storia della Berthoud Co. è strettamente connessa a quella della  Universal Watch.   Ferdinand Berthoud  ( born 1727, died 1807) was an eminent French Watchmaker author of technical manuals on Horological art as: Essai sur l’Horlogerie, Traite des Horloge Marines, Histoire de la mesure du temps. And other  works containing a mass of useful information concerning the History, theory and practise of the  horological art, dealing with Harrison’s, Sully’s and Le Roy’s inventions and, indeed, every thing known in Berthoud’s time. Berthoud, who was Breguet’s senior by two years, ends a brief notice of his brilliant contemporary saying: “Il n’a rien publiè”. In 1897, Louis Berthoud ,descendent of Ferdinand,  timed up with Georges Perret as “Perret & Berthoud”. In 1898 2nd  of september they established  a new  company named “Universal Watch”. From that time the history of  Berthoud Co.  is strictly tied  with Universal Watch.
